He Was in the Prophet’s Army... So Why Is He in Hell? | Science of Niyyah Explained
1 Verse. 1 Story. 1 Lesson.
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
1 Verse :
Say, “I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord – let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone.” (18:110)
1 Story :
The Battle of Uhud ended.
The dust settled.
The Quraish withdrew.
The Muslims began walking through the battlefield—recognizing the wounded, honoring the martyrs, comforting the survivors.
Among the injured was a man named Qazmān.
He fought with unbelievable courage.
He killed seven or eight enemy fighters.
His body was covered in wounds.
The Muslims carried him to the house of Banu Ẓufr.
People gathered around him saying:
“Glad tidings of Paradise!”
How could they not?
A man fighting under the banner of the Prophet ﷺ…
A warrior who stood his ground when others fled…
But Qazmān replies:
"By Allâh I have fought out of a zeal to my people. Had it not been for that I would have never fought."
Later, when his pain intensified,
Qazmān took his own life.
And the Prophet ﷺ had already declared about him:
“He is from the people of Fire.” [Zaad al-Ma’ād]
He fought in the army of the Messenger of Allah.
He performed what looked like heroic deeds.
But in the Sight of Allah…
it meant nothing.
Why?
Because it lacked ikhlāṣ.
It lacked niyyah.
It lacked “for the sake of Allah.”
The Companion and scholar ʿUbadah ibn al-Ṣāmit (RA) said:
“The world will be brought on the Day of Resurrection.
It will be said: Separate from it whatever was done for Allah alone.
And it will be separated. Then it will be said: Throw the rest into the Fire.”
[Kitāb az-Zuhd of al-Wakīʿ, 362]
1 Lesson : Why Some People Never Change
Let’s talk real.
How many times have you said:
“From tomorrow, I’ll change.”
“I’ll start praying properly.”
“I’ll study seriously.”
“I’ll fix my life.”
“I’ll become closer to Allah.”
And how long did it last?
Exactly.
We blame motivation.
We act like motivation is the engine of life.
But the Prophet ﷺ never said:
“Actions are by motivation.”
He said:
“Actions are by intentions.” (Sunan an-Nasā’ī 3437)
Intentions.
Deliberate.
Conscious.
Chosen direction.
Now here’s the shocking part…
1400 years later, research confirmed what the Prophet ﷺ already taught.
The Study
In 2001, researchers in Great Britain ran a study on 248 people trying to build exercise habits. They divided them into three groups:
Group 1: Control
Just track your exercise.
Group 2: Motivation
Track your exercise + read about the benefits of exercise + warnings about heart disease.
Group 3: Intention + Plan
Same motivation as Group 2
PLUS an implementation intention. They were asked to write:
“During the next week, I will exercise for at least 20 minutes on [DAY] at [TIME] in [PLACE].”
The Results
In the first and second groups, 35–38% of people exercised at least once that week.
(Meaning: motivation had almost no impact.)
But in Group 3 (motivation + a specific implementation intention):
91% exercised at least once that week—more than double the normal rate.

Let that sink in:
Motivation changed nothing.
Information changed nothing.
Feeling inspired changed nothing.
But a simple, clear, intentional plan changed everything.
Researchers stated:
“Motivation had no significant effects on exercise behavior.”
They discovered that what turns desire into real-world action isn’t your level of motivation,
but your plan for implementation.
Psychologists call it Implementation Intention.
But Muslims know it by another name:
Niyyah.
NIYYAH IS NOT A FEELING. NIYYAH IS A DIRECTION.
Many people think they lack motivation when what they really lack is clarity. It’s not always obvious why, when, or where to take action. Some people spend their entire lives waiting for the “right moment” to make an improvement.
They act only when they feel motivated—
and as soon as the dopamine fades,
the action disappears.
But look at how Allah teaches us clarity:
Allah did not just say “pray.”
He said:
pray at specific times,
face a specific direction (qiblah),
establish prayer in specific places (masjid/home spot),
and He gave us the reason:
“…So worship Me alone, and establish prayer for My remembrance.” (20:14)
Why?
Because clarity creates consistency.
A clear niyyah + a clear structure = consistent action.
How to set implementation intention?
STEP 1 — Write your niyyah clearly.
Not:
“I want to study Qur’an.”
But:
“I want to study Qur’an to please Allah, soften my heart, and live a guided life.”
(it should be for the sake of Allah)
STEP 2 — Turn niyyah into a concrete plan.
Not:
“I’ll memorize Qur’an.”
But:
“Every day after Fajr (time), for 20 minutes (duration), at my desk (place), I will memorize Qur’an for the sake of Allah (intention).”
STEP 3 — Make your environment a trigger.
Design your space to support your intention.
Place the mushaf where you’ll see it after Fajr.
Keep your desk clean.
Put your phone away.
Your environment becomes your silent reminder.
STEP 4 — Seek Allah’s help.
Ask Allah daily to help you stay committed and sincere.
STEP 5 — Repeat until it becomes your identity.
When the effort is sincere, Allah promises:
“As for those who struggle in Our cause,
We will surely guide them along Our Way.
And Allah is certainly with the good-doers.” (29:69)
1 Question for you :
What habit have I been “wanting” to build for years but never implemented because I rely on emotion instead of structure?
Dhikr of the week :
قُلۡ إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحۡيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ
Say, “Surely my prayer, my worship, my life, and my death are all for Allah—Lord of all worlds.’’ (6:162)
