An investment with infinite returns
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
1 Verse
“The example of those who spend their wealth in the cause of Allah is that of a grain that sprouts into seven ears, each bearing one hundred grains. And Allah multiplies ˹the reward even more˺ to whoever He wills. For Allah is All-Bountiful, All-Knowing.” (2:261)
1 Story
ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān (RA) migrated with the Prophet ﷺ to Madinah, quickly established himself in the marketplace using his prior business experience, and became known for his honesty in trade.
When the Muslims arrived in Madinah, they struggled with water supply because the wells were privately owned. Among them was the well of Rumah. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever will (buy and) dig the well of Ruma will be granted Paradise.”
The well was owned by a man from Banu Ghaffār, who refused to sell it because he had a monopoly and charged high prices while people were in need. Upon hearing the Prophet’s ﷺ words, ʿUthmān (RA) went to the owner and asked the price. The man demanded 40,000 dirhams.
ʿUthmān (RA) then asked: “What if I buy half of it? One day for me, one day for you.” The man agreed at 20,000.
On his day, ʿUthmān (RA) declared the water free and made it a waqf (endowment) for the people. Naturally, everyone came on his day, took all the water they needed, and left the owner with no profit on his day. Realizing his loss, the owner came back and offered to sell the other half. ʿUthmān (RA), being a wise negotiator, bought it for half the price—securing full ownership of the well.
Through this purchase, ʿUthmān (RA) not only earned the guarantee of Jannah, but also established a ṣadaqah jāriyah that continues to this day. That well irrigated gardens, and its revenue has been reinvested into more endowments for Muslims. In fact, there is still a bank account in Madinah tied to that well, funding projects—including hotels—whose profits go back to charity. SubḥānAllāh, hundreds of millions in ongoing charity are traced back to that single act.
Thus, ʿUthmān (RA) purchased his place in Jannah, as promised by the Prophet ﷺ, and until today, his ṣadaqah jāriyah continues—his reward growing with every drop of benefit that comes from that well.
1 Lesson: The Seed That Never Dies
Spending in this world is finite—your money leaves your hand, your time passes, your energy drains. But when it is spent Fi Sabīlillāh (in the path of Allah), it transforms into something infinite. It becomes an investment that keeps paying returns forever, even long after you’ve left this world.
Think about it: Allah says that even a single seed given in His cause doesn’t grow into one stalk, or two—but into seven stalks, each with one hundred grains. That’s 700 from just one. And Allah multiplies further for whomever He wills. This is not “earthly logic”—this is a heavenly economy. It’s like a business that never fails, a crop that is guaranteed, a stock that never crashes.
Every coin, every skill, every second of your life is a seed. You can either consume it in dunya—where it ends. Or plant it in Allah’s cause—where it becomes a garden without end.
🎯 Your Assignment
This week, sit down and write:
👉 What causes today truly qualify as Fi Sabīlillāh?
Not just charity, not just kindness, but actions that directly serve Allah’s mission on earth. Identify them. Then plant at least one seed.
1 Question for You
👉 If my money, my skills, my energy, and my time are all “seeds,” what am I planting today for the mission of Allah to spread across the earth?
Dhikr of the Week
اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلاَلِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ
Allāhummak-finī biḥalālika ʿan ḥarāmik, wa 'aghninī bi faḍlika ʿamman siwāk.
Meaning:
O Allah, suffice me with what You have allowed instead of what You have forbidden, and make me independent of all others besides You.
Reference: At-Tirmidhi 5/560.
Virtue: If you had a debt upon you similar to the mountain of Sir, Allah would fulfill it for you.
